Given the instability in my relationship with Marta, my lack of interest in logistical support for my boys in the USA, the fact that I had few friends in Portland who had time for me, and the fact that I didn't care for the responsibilities involved with home ownership, I started spending more time in Laos.
At the beginning of 2024, I took a position as a contractor with a company named Conscia, which sold a SaaS platform for orchestrating enterprise solutions. SaaS stands for Software as a Service, which means that the vendor provides not just the software, but the hardware infrastructure on which it runs, as well as realtime technical and operational support for customer solutions running on that platform. Orchestration felt something like the work that I had done with EDI, providing glue betwen enterprise solutions, but using HTTP web services and JSON instead of dialup Value Added Networks (VANs) and EDI standards.
While I very much liked some parts of the role, such as implementing prototypes and writing documentation, as well as members of the team including her husband Dwayne, it was clear from the beginning that I was going to have problems with the CEO Sana. She was relatively non-technical, but apparently thought that she was. She would never stop talking, never giving prospects a chance to lead sales conversations, and not realizing that nobody really wanted to hear what she said. While this would work for some people, I knew that it would not build credibility with the technical audiences with whom I thought it was important for us to build relationships.
Even though she offered me a small bit of equity in the company that she projected would be worth hundreds of millions of dollars, this remote role lasted less than five months for me. Sana was a micromanager that was constantly changing direction, which was wasteful and frustrating for me and Maria, who I referred to jokingly as my insubordinate subordinate. I eventually wrote something very minor and vage on a company slack channel about us needing to be trusted to do our jobs. Sana read that comment and scheduled a call, at which point I knew that it was time to quit.
I had not had a client at Konabos for quite some time, and record March 2024 as the time when I left that position.
I went back and forth between the USA and Laos, spending about a month in Asia each time, and generally more longer periods in the USA. I was trying to meet my commitments to parent the boys approximately half the time, but Susan said she never wanted to be apart from them for more than two weeks, which made this very difficult for me. I never abandoned her with the boys - I always gave her first right of refusal and offered to provide alternate care for them during my absence, whether from my family or friends or professional help. She strongly objected to the idea of my brother Tim standing in for me, largely because of his drinking and smoking.

I am not sure when John met Bailey, but I was impressed to watched their relationship blossom. She did not seem to have the characteristics of his mother that I had feared would attract him. He made some mistakes, but they were able to recover. As of November 2025, they are still together, and I am proud that he can sustain what appears to be a healthy relationship with a girl.
Things continued to be on-again, off-again with Marta. When they were off, I soetimes got closer to Kham, but Kham and I have always had problems and our relationship has included significant gaps.
